Pope Benedict writes to President about Malta visit

Pope Benedict has written to President George Abela to thank him for his invitation to visit Malta.

"I am pleased to welcome your invitation and, as I do so, I would like to express again my affection for the people of Malta. I look forward to joining them as they commemorate this important anniversary of St Paul's arrival on their shores. The solemn recollection of that momentous occasion will surely afford the Maltese people, and indeed, the whole Catholic world, a most fruitful opportunity to reflect upon and to deepen their Christian faith."

Pope Benedict assured the President of his prayers.

Pope Benedict is due to visit Malta on April 17 and 18.
